How long does fungus live on surfaces? Longer than the infection it came from. Dermatophytes stay viable in the environment for over six months, and researchers have recovered them from household items up to 18 months later. One species survived 60 days inside a bottle of nail polish at room temperature.

What kind of fungus are we talking about?
Dermatophytes. They're a group of fungi that feed on keratin, which is what your skin, hair and nails are made of. Athlete's foot, ringworm and most toenail fungus all come from this same family.
That matters for this question, because keratin is also what you shed. Skin flakes, hair, bits of nail. The fungus travels inside those fragments, and the fragment is what protects it.
How long does fungus live on surfaces?
A 2024 review of dermatophyte biology puts it plainly: in the external environment they can remain viable for over six months, which the authors say is a large part of why the infection is so common and why it spreads so easily through objects rather than skin-to-skin contact.
Inside a house, the figure runs higher. A 2022 scoping review of household transmission found dermatophytes persisting in the home environment for up to 18 months, particularly on textiles and cleaning supplies.
How long does foot fungus live on surfaces? Same answer, different name. Athlete's foot, ringworm and nail fungus all come out of the one dermatophyte group, so the six-month figure covers all three.

Look at the last two rows together. The thing you're treating outlives the treatment by a wide margin, and it does it somewhere you aren't looking.
How long can fungus live in shoes?
No study has put a clean number on a shoe, and anyone who gives you one is guessing. What the evidence does show is that shoes work as a reservoir. A review of 33 studies on shoe and sock sanitisation spanning 1920 to 2016 concluded that cured or improved patients can become reinfected through an infected shoe, sock or textile.
A shoe is close to the ideal case for survival. It's dark, it holds moisture for hours after you take it off, it's lined with fabric that traps skin flakes, and nothing you do to a shoe involves heat or a wash cycle. Six months is the floor, not the ceiling.
Does toenail fungus live in shoes as well? Yes. Nail fungus and athlete's foot are the same organism, and the nail debris you shed into a shoe is dense keratin, which shelters the fungus better than a loose skin flake does. So how long can toenail fungus live in shoes has the same open-ended answer: months rather than days, and putting the shoe back on doesn't shorten it.

Does fungus survive on dry surfaces?
Yes, and this is the part that surprises people. Damp is what fungus needs to grow. It isn't what it needs to survive.
Dermatophytes get through dry spells as arthroconidia, which are hardy spore-like fragments. They sit dormant on a dry floor or a dry sock and wait for moisture. A dry bathroom floor at 2pm is not a safe bathroom floor. It's the same floor, waiting.
So how long does fungus live on dry surfaces? As long as it does anywhere else. Dryness stalls growth, it doesn't run the clock down.
What about towels, socks and the bath mat?
Textiles are the strongest documented route, and there's a specific number that should change how you do laundry.
A 2022 study contaminated 180 cotton gauze pads with three Trichophyton species and put them through domestic laundering. At 40 °C the fungus survived. At 60 °C and 90 °C it was removed. Tumble drying, in a domestic machine or a laundromat one, didn't kill it. Nor did freezing at −20 °C for a full week.
So the temperature dial on the machine is doing more work than anything else in this article. Most people wash socks at 30 or 40.
The NHS advice lines up with this. It says to use a separate towel for your feet and wash it regularly, and not to share towels, socks or shoes.
How long does ringworm fungus live on surfaces?
The same range, because it's the same organism. Ringworm on the body, athlete's foot on the feet and fungal nail infection are different presentations of the same dermatophyte group, so the environmental survival figures carry across.
This is why wrestling and jiu-jitsu clubs care so much about mats. It's also why mat sports have their own hygiene problem.
How long does toenail fungus live on surfaces?
Nail clippings are the most protective vehicle of the lot. A nail fragment is dense keratin, and the fungus inside it is shielded from drying out in a way that a loose skin flake isn't.
Which brings you to the clipper. The 2022 household review found sharing nail equipment to be a documented route between family members, and recorded Trichophyton rubrum surviving 60 days inside nail polish at room temperature. Transmission showed up in 44% to 47% of households with an affected member.
If that's your household, cleaning the clippers properly is a ten-minute job with a real payoff.
Where the fungus actually lives, ranked
Not by how gross it looks. By how much barefoot traffic the surface gets, and how well it holds moisture.
- The inside of your shoes. Dark, damp, lined, and never cleaned.
- Socks and towels washed below 60 °C. Handled daily, laundered ineffectively.
- The bath mat. Wet cloth, bare feet, and the last thing anyone thinks to wash hot.
- Shared floors where people converge. In a study of seven indoor swimming pool facilities, Trichophyton interdigitale and T. rubrum were detected on floors and nowhere else, with the highest counts where visitors walked barefoot between rooms.
- Nail clippers and files. Small, shared, and full of keratin.
What actually ends it
Three things have evidence behind them, and they're unglamorous.
Heat, in a wash. 60 °C and above. Not the dryer, the wash.
Time and air, for what can't be washed. Rotating two pairs of shoes so each gets 48 hours to dry out is the practical version of the NHS line about not wearing the same shoes more than two or three days running. It isn't sterilising. It's making the environment worse for the organism.
A routine on the skin itself. You can't wash a floor you don't own, and you'll never control every surface you stand on. What you can control is the ten seconds after your feet come off that floor.
That last one is the whole idea behind Sole Shield. Two ingredients, aqueous iodine and distilled water, sprayed on feet and into shoes at the end of the day. It's the step that goes where the wash cycle can't. No alcohol, so no sting on skin that's already cracked between the toes, and no brown stain on a bath mat.
An honest limit on all of this
Survival is not the same as infection. A viable spore on a floor doesn't mean everyone who walks over it picks something up. Skin has to be broken, softened or damp for long enough, which is why the same shared shower produces athlete's foot in one person and nothing in the next.
The persistence numbers tell you why reinfection is common. They don't tell you that exposure equals infection. Anyone selling you that is overselling.
